What is World Breastfeeding Week and Why Does It Open Agosto Dourado?
World Breastfeeding Week (WBAW) kicks off Brazil's Agosto Dourado — Golden August — a month-long national campaign dedicated to promoting and protecting breastfeeding. The 2026 theme, set by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), is Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start to Life: Strengthen What Works. Brazil's Ministry of Health uses this window to scale up protection, promotion, and support for breastfeeding nationwide.
Why Does Breast Milk Matter So Much?
According to the Ministry of Health, breastfeeding is fundamental for adequate child nutrition, food security, and poverty reduction in Brazil. Pediatric specialists stress that breast milk provides immunity benefits that infant formula simply cannot replicate — despite heavy marketing claims to the contrary.
What Does a Real Family's Story Tell Us?
Lorrany Duarte, a mother of two from the Federal District, gave birth to baby Elisa just one week before this article was published. Determined to breastfeed exclusively on demand for the first six months, Lorrany is motivated partly by a difficult memory: her first daughter, now nine years old, was switched to formula at one month and "was always very frail, always sick, and took a very long time to grow and develop," Lorrany recalled. This time, her older sister Marielly — mother of three — is by her side, offering hands-on support and encouraging her to persist.
Is Infant Formula Ever Appropriate?
Yes — but only under specific medical conditions. Rossiclei Pinheiro, president of the Breastfeeding Scientific Department of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (DCAM-SBP), warns that commercial lobbying puts enormous pressure on healthcare professionals and families. "There is very heavy marketing claiming these formulas replace breast milk, and they do not," she stated. The lobbying happens at hospital entrances, on social media, in doctors' offices, and even during festive dates. Formula is safe and necessary only when recommended by a paediatrician or nutritionist for a specific clinical reason.
Where Can Mothers Get Support?
Brazil's national network of Human Milk Banks (Bancos de Leite Humano) provides free, professional support. Lorrany and her sister Marielly received assistance at the Human Milk Bank of Hospital Regional de Taguatinga, where a breast pump helped Lorrany increase her milk flow significantly within just one week.
