Do You Need to Prepare Your Nipples Before Birth?
One of the biggest surprises for expectant mothers is learning that no special nipple preparation is needed during pregnancy. Obstetrician Gustavo Dias Eccard, from Hospital Brasília Águas Claras, explains that most old-school preparation practices lack solid scientific backing and some can actually be harmful. The modern approach focuses on qualified prenatal education and lactation support.
The only care needed during pregnancy is simple hygiene — rinsing with water in the shower. Soaps, creams, oils and moisturisers are not recommended because they can strip the natural lubrication produced by the Montgomery glands, which exist precisely to protect and prepare the nipples.
Can You Breastfeed With Flat or Inverted Nipples?
Most women with flat or inverted nipples can breastfeed successfully. Dr Eccard warns that unnecessarily alarming mothers backfires: studies show that 13% of women who were told they might have a nipple problem gave up on their intention to breastfeed. No specific preparation is needed during pregnancy. Techniques such as Hoffman exercises and the inverted-syringe method show evidence mainly in the immediate postpartum period. The most important step is to contact a lactation consultant right after birth.
Is Colostrum Leaking During Pregnancy Normal?
Yes — and it is a positive sign. Colostrum appearing in the third trimester means the breasts are preparing well for breastfeeding. A well-fitting, supportive bra is the main recommendation. No products or manipulation are needed. Expectant mothers should feel reassured, not worried.
One Important Warning for High-Risk Pregnancies
Women at risk of premature labour should avoid excessive nipple stimulation in the third trimester, as it can trigger contractions through the release of oxytocin.
