What Is the AI Collar Technology Behind This Deal?

The collar was developed by Brazilian agri-tech company Cowmed and is the first device of its kind designed specifically for dairy cows. It tracks behaviour, feeding patterns, rest, rumination, respiration, body temperature and GPS location in real time. An AI engine analyses the data to flag health risks before they become serious and to confirm whether a sick animal is responding to treatment.

"It is like a smartwatch on the cow's neck, only far more advanced," said Thiago Martins, CEO of Cowmed.

How Does Tokenisation Turn a Cow Into Collateral?

The farmer selects the animals to be used as collateral and submits them for tokenisation. Their health and location data then flows automatically to a blockchain platform, giving the lender continuous, tamper-proof visibility over each animal. Target FIDC, the firm behind the operation, registered the transaction on B3 β€” Brazil's main stock exchange β€” making it the first recorded credit operation in the country backed by a tokenised herd.

Why Did Banks Discount Livestock Collateral Before?

Humberto Brenner, director of Target FIDC, explains that livestock has long been the "ugly duckling of the financial system". A cow appraised at R$ 20,000 was typically worth only R$ 8,000 as collateral because lenders had no way to verify its whereabouts or health status. That uncertainty forced banks to apply steep discounts or charge higher interest rates to offset the risk.

What Were the Terms of the Pioneer Loan?

In the inaugural deal, 10 monitored cows at Fazenda Engenho Velho in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, were appraised at R$ 120,000 combined. The farm received a R$ 100,000 loan β€” a collateral-to-loan ratio far better than the industry norm. The farm's owner, JoΓ£o Guilherme Brenner, noted that his herd has worn Cowmed collars for ten years and that vets consult the data every day.

Who Is This Model Most Useful For?

This type of financing targets smaller rural credit operations such as crop-season working capital, where pledging a multimillion-real property deed makes no practical sense. As Humberto Brenner put it: "It does not make sense to use a land title worth R$ 10 million for a R$ 300,000 working-capital deal."
