What is Dança em Trânsito and when does it take place?

Now in its 24th edition, Dança em Trânsito is Rio de Janeiro's international contemporary dance festival. It runs from Tuesday 4 to 11 August 2026, bringing together 20 companies and solo artists from across Brazil and abroad.

Where are the shows being held?

Ticketed performances take place at Espaço Tápias in Barra da Tijuca and at three downtown theatres: Nélson Rodrigues, Carlos Gomes and João Caetano. Tickets are priced accessibly at R$ 10 to R$ 20. There is also a free outdoor show at Praça Mauá, in the port area in front of the Museu do Amanhã, starting at 4 pm with the Bloco Turbilhão Carioca — a percussion group founded in 2007 that blends regional Brazilian rhythms such as frevo mixed with funk using traditional samba-school drum instruments.

Which Brazilian states and countries are represented?

Brazilian artists travel from São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Pernambuco, Ceará, Goiás, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso do Sul and Santa Catarina. International guests come from South Korea, France, Italy and Luxembourg, with residencies and creative exchange processes also on the programme.

Who will evaluate the performances?

Programmers, curators and festival directors from France, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, South Korea and Uruguay will assess the shows — a rare opportunity for Brazilian artists to be seen by major international decision-makers.

What are the Janelas para o Mundo sessions?

Two open public talks titled Janelas para o Mundo (Windows to the World) offer audiences a panorama of contemporary dance abroad. The first features Lee Jong-Ho — founder and artistic director of the Seoul International Dance Festival (SIDance), president of the Seoul section of the CID-UNESCO and president of the Korean Association of Dance Critics and Researchers — presenting the dance scene in South Korea. Sessions are held at Espaço Tápias at 11:30 am.
