What happened at Flipelô 2026?

The 10th edition of the Festa Literária Internacional do Pelourinho (Flipelô) drew more than 330,000 visitors to the historic centre of Salvador, Bahia, from 5 to 9 August 2026. The figure surpassed organisers' expectations and set a new all-time attendance record for the festival.

Who organised and took part?

The event is produced by the Fundação Casa de Jorge Amado. This year's line-up featured more than 500 Brazilian writers, including Carla Madeira, Milton Hatoum and Itamar Vieira Junior. Nine international guests representing five countries — the United States, Portugal, Angola, Spain and Sri Lanka — also participated.

What made the 10th edition special?

President of the foundation Angela Fraga called it a "historic edition", noting that the Pelourinho was packed with readers, students, writers, artists and families. Tributes to poet Myriam Fraga — the festival's founder — and artist Calasans Neto moved audiences and reaffirmed the festival's commitment to literature and the democratisation of access to books.

What is the mission behind Flipelô?

Flipelô was conceived by poet Myriam Fraga with the goal of preserving and celebrating the legacy of writer Jorge Amado, promoting Bahian culture and art, and encouraging reading especially among young people. Angela Fraga summed it up: "Flipelô is a collective construction that belongs to the Historic Centre, to Bahia and to Brazil."
