The economist suggests a guideline of up to 5% of monthly income for gifts and celebrations — but only when the household budget is balanced and there are no overdue bills or high-interest debts. He also recommends building a small monthly savings pot throughout the year dedicated to seasonal dates, so holiday spending does not eat into emergency reserves.

When Does Instalment Buying Make Sense?

Instalment plans can be a useful tool when they carry zero interest and the total fits comfortably within the monthly budget. The danger comes when buyers look only at the parcel size and ignore how many months the commitment will run after the celebration is over.
