The change stems from a bilateral agreement signed between Brazil and France on July 1, 2026, ending a requirement that had been debated for at least 16 years. The move mirrors the visa-free access French tourists have long enjoyed when visiting Brazil.

Who Benefits the Most?

The state of Amapá gains the most immediately — it is the only Brazilian state that shares a border with the French territory. The city of Oiapoque (population ~26,600) is connected to Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock via the Binational Bridge over the Oiapoque River. Residents expect easier family visits, shopping trips, and cross-border trade.

What Are the Entry Requirements Without a Visa?

Even without a visa, travelers must meet specific conditions for trips up to 30 days:

• Valid passport — at least 3 months of validity beyond the return date, issued within the last 10 years, with 2 blank pages.
• Travel health insurance covering a minimum of €30,000 for the entire trip.
• Yellow fever vaccination certificate.
• Proof of sufficient funds: €32.50 per day if staying with relatives, or €65 per day if using a hotel (e.g., a 10-day hotel trip requires proof of €650, roughly R$3,790).

What About Driving Across the Border?

Travelers entering by car must present a valid driver's license, vehicle registration, and auto insurance. Temporary insurance can be purchased at the border, ranging from €95 for 15 days to €1,525 for one year.

What Are the Limits of This Exemption?

The visa waiver does not apply to commercial trips. Stays longer than 30 days still require a long-stay visa, which must be requested through the France-Visas platform. The border crossing at the Binational Bridge operates daily from 07:00 to 19:00.
