Who Is Daniel Perez, Trump's Pick for Brazil?

Daniel Perez, 38, is the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives — the state legislature equivalent to Brazil's Assembleia Legislativa. A Republican and close Trump ally, he was nominated by the White House in June to lead the U.S. Embassy in Brasília.

Why Is He at the Centre of a Diplomatic Row?

Washington announced Perez's nomination before formally requesting Brazil's agrément — the standard diplomatic authorisation a host country must grant before an ambassador can take up the post. Brazil had not yet responded when the U.S. revoked the visa of Brazil's ambassador in Washington, Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, on 4 August, describing the move as a response to what it called undue delay. Brazilian officials, however, had not intended to block the nomination.

What Did Perez Say About Brazil?

At a recent U.S. Senate hearing, Perez outlined his priorities for the role: supporting Brazilian democratic institutions and pushing for conditions that allow free and fair elections and freedom of expression in Brazil.

What Is His Background?

Born in New York to Cuban immigrant parents, Perez moved to Florida in 1993. He is a lawyer, graduating from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law. He has served as a state representative since 2017 and became House Speaker in 2024. His legislative focus includes child welfare, healthcare, family strengthening, education and electoral integrity. He is a vocal MAGA supporter and in January praised the U.S. military operation in Venezuela that led to the capture of former president Nicolás Maduro.

What Happens Next?

Perez still requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate as well as Brazil's formal agrément before he can take up the ambassadorship. The diplomatic spat has added uncertainty to the timeline.
