What Is GEO and Why Are Companies Paying for It?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand more likely to be cited when users ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini a question. Just as SEO helped companies rank on Google, GEO aims to get brands mentioned inside AI-generated answers β€” a channel that is converting buyers at a dramatically higher rate.

How Fast Is the Market Growing?

According to Market Intelo, the global GEO market was valued at US$848 million in 2025 and is projected to reach US$19.8 billion by 2034. The momentum is already visible in commerce data: Adobe's Q1 2026 figures show that traffic arriving from AI platforms converts 42% better than non-LLM traffic β€” a full reversal from 12 months earlier, when the same metric was 38% lower. Buyers referred by AI also generate 37% more revenue per visit.

Who Is Funding the GEO Space?

In April, the first GEO unicorn emerged in the United States. Startup Profound raised US$96 million in a Series C round, reaching a US$1 billion valuation. Within a single year the company closed three funding rounds, with the two earlier rounds together totalling US$55 million.

What Are Brazilian Startups Doing?

Brazilian founders are moving quickly. First Answer, co-founded by Johanna Goulart (CEO) and Rodrigo Beckmann (CTO), was built initially as an in-house fix after the pair noticed AI was draining traffic β€” and subscriptions β€” from their previous employer's website. Seeing broader potential, they turned it into a product for other companies.

Is GEO Replacing SEO?

According to AndrΓ© Nunes, managing director and partner at Nav9 and CTO at Bolder, GEO complements rather than replaces SEO and paid traffic. He notes that Generation Z was already shifting searches toward social media before AI accelerated the trend. "There is no silver bullet. It is a new space with great positioning opportunities, but you need a solid brand, a good strategy, and the speed to change plans quickly," Nunes said.
