Why is StoneX buying Banco Travelex in Brazil?

StoneX Group announced on Wednesday the acquisition of Banco Travelex S.A. in Brazil, a move designed to dramatically expand its foreign-exchange and payments footprint in Latin America's largest economy. The deal does not include Travelex Confidence, the retail brokerage with physical stores and service points, which will continue operating independently and may keep the Travelex Confidence brand.

How much did StoneX pay?

People familiar with the negotiations say the price tag landed somewhere between US$ 40 million and US$ 50 million. Travelex had previously hired BTG Pactual to run the sale process for its Brazilian operation.

What does the combined business look like?

Once integrated, StoneX says the combined operation is expected to process around US$ 6 billion in annual volume, serving roughly 20,000 clients. StoneX already operates in more than 180 countries across 140 currencies, specialising in spot FX, international payments, receivables and NDFs.

What new products will Brazilian clients get?

StoneX's international payments division plans to roll out banking products gradually, including:

  • Non-resident accounts
  • Proprietary Pix
  • Internet and mobile banking
  • New financial settlement capabilities

According to the company, the transaction "should significantly expand StoneX's global payments capabilities and strengthen its presence in one of Latin America's largest FX markets."

When will the deal close?

The acquisition is subject to approval by the Banco Central do Brasil and standard closing conditions, with completion estimated in approximately 12 months.
