What is the "Funk Choir" and why is it going viral?

A group of young MCs from São Paulo has taken social media by storm by combining synchronized hand-clapping with funk medleys performed in choir formation. The trio MCs Zignani, Oracioh and Kauan PV — who call themselves "Os Mlks da Medley" — filmed themselves singing on a staircase in the Cangaíba neighbourhood, in São Paulo's East Zone, and racked up around five million views on Instagram and TikTok.

How does the hand-clap technique actually work?

The formula is deceptively simple: only the palm moves, while the arm stays still. By synchronising their claps, the MCs create a clean acoustic beat that serves as the sole instrumental backdrop. "Only the hand moves, the arm stays still. We synchronise so the melody comes out clean and people loved the idea — the comments praise how good the voices sound with the claps," explained MC Zignani.

Who came up with the Funk Choir concept?

The idea belongs to MC DR, a funkeiro and entrepreneur who was inspired by a YouTube video showing people singing in the street like a traditional choir. He decided to blend that format with the funk medley — a style in which two or more songs are performed over the same rhythm. "I saw a crowd singing like a choir in the street and thought: I think we can do this with funk. Our essence is the hand-clap," he told G1.

What is the history of hand-clap funk medleys?

Funk medleys have existed since the genre's early days, but the rise of camera phones and YouTube in the early 2010s made them a staple. One of the first viral examples featured MCs Guimê, Rodolfinho and Lon. The format later became a launchpad for new artists: major names such as MC Kevin, MC Hariel, MC Davi and MC IG all introduced themselves through hand-clap medley videos.

Has the format reached international audiences before?

Yes. In September 2024, MC Menor JP posted a video performing an acoustic hand-clap version of "Mina de Vermelho" by MC Daleste. The clip's speed and precision went global, catching the attention of Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton and YouTube megastar MrBeast.
