What Is Changing in Brazilian Passport Issuance Abroad?

Brazilian consulates in several countries have shifted how they issue passports. Instead of printing the document on-site, consular posts now forward applications to Brazil, where the Casa da Moeda do Brasil (CMB) — the national mint — produces and ships the passport back to the respective country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) describes the change as part of a controlled pilot project.

Where Is the New System Already in Effect?

The pilot launched in April 2026 at the consulates in Boston and New York. By July 2026, it had expanded to all 11 Brazilian consular posts in the United States, as well as embassies in Accra and Doha, and consulates-general in Frankfurt, Lisbon, Porto, and Mexico City. All other posts worldwide continue printing passports locally.
