Why Are Small Businesses Hit Harder by Scams?

A landmark study by Sebrae and the Brazilian Institute of Economics (IBRE/FGV), surveying 4,466 entrepreneurs, found that 44% of small businesses have faced digital or phone scam attempts in the last 12 months — just below the 47% rate recorded for medium and large companies.

Who Suffers the Bigger Financial Blow?

Despite facing scam attempts at a similar rate, small businesses feel the financial pain far more acutely. Among small businesses that fell victim to scams, 31% reported direct financial losses, compared to only 22% among medium and large companies. The damage is inversely proportional to company size.

What Is the Protection Gap?

The most alarming finding is the chasm in preparedness. While 72% of medium and large companies have structured digital protection measures and conduct regular fraud-prevention training, only 17% of small businesses operate at the same level of professional readiness.

What Does Sebrae Say About the Root Cause?

Sebrae president Rodrigo Soares points to the human factor — not sophisticated technology failures — as the main vulnerability. A click on a suspicious link, a failure to verify a Pix recipient, or the absence of two-factor authentication are the real entry points. Small business owners who simultaneously handle the cash register, serve customers, and manage social media are especially prone to acting on autopilot, which is exactly what fraudsters exploit.

Soares stressed that training entrepreneurs to protect their digital processes is just as urgent as teaching them basic cash-flow management: preventing fraud is one of the most effective strategies for protecting profitability.
