Why is Shein struggling to justify its $50 billion IPO valuation?
Shein filed its Hong Kong IPO prospectus on Sunday, revealing figures that are making institutional investors nervous. Revenue grew just 8% to $41.8 billion in 2025, while net profit collapsed 39% to $2.06 billion. In Q1 2026, the company posted a net loss of $99 million.
What does the operating margin tell us?
Winston Ma, CEO of the Global Public Investment Funds Forum and former managing director of China Investment Corporation, zeroed in on the key number: a 2.9% operating margin. He argued investors will stop treating Shein as a hyper-growth tech platform and start pricing it as a traditional retail and logistics company operating in a high-friction global trade environment.
How did the end of de minimis hurt Shein?
The elimination of the US de minimis rule β which previously exempted purchases under $800 from import duties β directly squeezed Shein's costs and slowed US sales growth. The company said it is evaluating options including price increases in the United States to offset the new costs. Europe is adding pressure too: new EU taxes on low-value imports could, according to Shein's own prospectus, have an impact equal to or greater than the US tariff blow.
Who benefits from Shein's troubles?
A Citi report noted that Shein's European difficulties could reduce competition in the low-cost fashion segment, potentially benefiting retailers such as Primark and H&M.
Has Shein's private valuation already fallen?
Yes β dramatically. The prospectus shows valuation dropped from $98.2 billion after a 2022 funding round to $64 billion after a 2024 round. Shen Meng of Beijing-based boutique investment bank Chanson & Co. said a significant uplift at the Hong Kong IPO is unlikely, adding that a London or New York listing years ago would have been far more advantageous.
