What happened with the mass WhatsApp bans?
On Monday, August 3, a wave of mass WhatsApp account suspensions hit users around the world, including Brazil. Some users report having been banned even earlier β more than a month before the incident β with no clear explanation from the platform.
Who was affected and what did they lose?
Among those affected is Dionatam Carteri, a mechanic from Passo Fundo (Rio Grande do Sul), who had used his WhatsApp account since 2015. He was banned in late July and lost over 10 years of messages, family photos, contract documents, and β critically for his business β client contacts.
"In some cases I don't have the client's number saved in my phone, only on WhatsApp. I can't reach them, can't send a quote, I end up losing the job and the income," he said.
What does WhatsApp say?
WhatsApp stated that it can ban accounts found to be violating its terms of service, which prohibit spam, scams, and activities that endanger other users. The platform also confirmed that suspended users can request an additional review by tapping the "Request Review" button shown on the suspension screen.
However, WhatsApp did not comment on specific accusations of wrongful bans. It also noted that contacting the company through other channels or third-party accounts does not speed up the review process.
What are affected users doing?
One user who believes she was banned unjustly has filed a lawsuit against WhatsApp, requesting an injunction to reverse the ban and citing losses to her professional accounts. Many others reported the bans on Downdetector, saying there was no apparent reason for their suspension.
What should e-commerce sellers and freelancers know?
If your business relies on WhatsApp for client communication, this case is a stark warning. Losing access to your account means losing contact history and potentially losing revenue. Consider backing up chats regularly and saving important client numbers in your phone's address book independently of the app.
